Getting the most out of the levy with workplace mentoring

Thank you for wanting to find out more about getting the most out of your leadership and management apprenticeships.

How can The Mentoring School help us with our leaders?

We recognise that for many businesses they want to use the Apprenticeship Levy to develop their internal skills, instead or in addition to recruiting external apprentices.  This means using the funding to train higher level apprenticeships.

A huge part of their apprenticeship is the development of new skills and the practicalities of filling the 20% off-the-job activities.  The National Workplace Mentoring Qualification helps, even the most experienced mentor, develop new skills based on psychology and neuro-scientific advances.  Even the trainers coming on the Trainer courses are telling us they thought they’d be hearing old stuff all over again and that they were wrong!

What are the benefits for us?

We help employers to train their staff mentoring skills that:

  • increase employee motivation
  • increase job performance and productivity
  • reduce absenteeism
  • decrease staff turnover
  • develop a more involved workforce
  • have an amazing value-added to really show off to others (and inspectors)!

How is the course delivered?

There are three ways we planned to deliver the course: by eLearning, in-person for groups of colleagues and through training licenced trainers.

The team had worked with some universities to get the reflective assignment people complete in order to gain the qualification recognised as prior learning for some courses. We looked at the options for accreditation and decided to begin the registration process with OfQual ourselves.

How did this come about?

We began working with schools and colleges, delivering consultancy and mentoring courses for social and emotional difficulties, work readiness or academic skills. We began to receive enquiries from employers asking us about how they could best support apprentices they were struggling to support. We helped them and in the process it became clear that many employers do not always understand the different expectations from those of an employee, why they experience so many difficulties and hurdles when it comes to integrating them and teaching them the skills they need to perform their jobs.

At the same time, it became apparent that many employers wanted to run effective mentoring schemes based on a sound psychological basis and not just rely on a variance of experience levels across the teams.  We developed the National Workplace Mentoring Qualification as a result.
